GK Global Summit

Dr. Olivia F. De Leon, URS President attended the Gawad Kalinga Global Summit on June 25-27,2010 in Singapore. The GK Summit is an annual event where GKs partners, volunteers, workers and advocates from all over the world gather together for 3 days to be inspired and empowered and to refresh their commitment to GK’s vision and mission to end poverty for 5 million families by 2024.The summit provides an avenue where like-minded and like-hearted people who are concerned about the plight of the world especially the poorest of the poor, can converge, discuss and find solutions to address the global problem of poverty. As an emerging Asian model for community development and poverty alleviation, Gawad Kalinga serves as the Filipinos’ response to the problems of poverty in the world. Dr. De Leon presented the project, “Kalingang URS” (URS provides care) a partnership program between URS and the Gawad Kalinga for community Development. She cited the project components such as Bayan Anihan and Goodbyre Gutom,. She mentioned the GK activities namely Shelter and Site Development, Tree Planting of Fruit Bearing Trees, Livelihood and Skills Training, Project Sibol, Health Feeding Program, Waste Management Training and Alternative Energy Development Training Program and Responsible Parenting.

National Recognition on Literacy

University of Rizal System earned a national recognition on Literacy Program awarded by the Department of Education. The 2010 National Literacy conference and Awards formally opened on September 8,2010 at Teachers’ Camp, Baguio City with the theme,” Community Development : A Shared Responsibility to society through Functional Literacy Winners of the 2010 National Literacy Awards for the Outstanding Literacy Program category and Outstanding Local Government Units Category were awarded trophies and plaques of recognition for their contributions to the Literacy Program . Special recognition was given to the University of Rizal System for “The Literacy Program:URS Experience”. The Director for Extension, Rowena Laroza, and project leaders of the Literacy Program namely Marilou Pantaleon, Marivic Reyes, Marites Rio, Rizalina Fernandez, Emma Linga, German Penaranda, Cecilia Repuya and Edward Andrecio received the special citation. Undersecretary Rizalina Rivera of DepEd remarked that the Department is not only promoting literacy but also giving hope to the people. She challenged everyone to quadruple all the efforts to fight against illiteracy.

Search for Outstanding Higher Education Institution Extension Program

The University of Rizal System participated in the Search through its extension program entitled “Productivity Enhancement for Upland Farming in Tanay, Rizal “ with Project Director Dr. Olivia F De Leon,URS President asst. Project Director Dr. Hermy D. Estrabo, Project leader Dr. Flordeliza Penaranda, On-farm Study Leader Dr. Eulenia V. Solano, Co-Study leader Forester Arnold T. Guiyab, In-Campus Study Leader Dr. German Penaranda, Co-Study Leader Prof. Elvira Abines, Research—Dr. Namerod Mateo and Farm Workers Romualdo Piscasio and Reynaldo Ross. The Extension Project was presented at CHED Regional Office
