COE Faculty and Student Research Congress

On August 25, 2010, the Dean, Departmant chair, faculty and students of the College of Education (COE) organized a research congress to instill to the students and faculty the importance of research through presentation of completed researches conducted by faculty from COE and other colleges in the University.

Dr. Hermy D. Estrabo, Vice President for Research and Extension, made it very certain that he disseminated the necessary information that future researchers would have to be aware of with regard to research. According to him, “Researching doesn’t come to an end when the theses are already book-bound and piled up in the library. We should start our actions of putting those into the limelight, to ensure that all the hard work is all worth it, that is to have those published in the legal manner.” Coming up with the improvement of previous researches would make it more fulfilling for students conducting researches. It is also one way of making the theses which are stuck in the library for a long time worth reading and worth being proud of. It will not only bring researches the prestige and honor, but also the University where they are in.

Reiterating the issue on environmental awareness and cleanliness of the campus we are in, Dr. Reneecilia B. Paz de Leon, the Chancellor of Cluster II and the Acting Dean of the College of Engineering, again reminded the students of URSM to exemplify love and concern for the surroundings. She also motivated the Research students to make a stand in the field of research. Dr. Yonie S.D. Timog introduced the guest speaker, emphasizing on the educational background and achievements as a mentor and as a successful researcher of Dr. Nelson Gonzales. Starting the lecture, he mentioned about the most important things an action research must contain and what are the vital components of non-science and technology researches. He has also done a review of what a research is and what are the most familiar terms that accompany it as we explore that certain field of study. Elaborating more on the characteristics that a research must possess, he aroused the interest of students and enables them more to listen to him attentively. A lot of things were learned from him by the College of Education student researchers including the phases or stages of conducting a research and how all the other parts should be done accordingly. The second speaker was Dr. Allan U. Conde, who lectured about science and technology-related researches. The crowd enjoyed viewing the pictures he showed which illustrated the craziest researches done and thought of by some of his students and the people whom he knew. One very unforgettable was the one showing two umbrellas especially made for the shoes. These umbrellas’ purpose was to avoid shoes from getting wet during rainy days.
